Get ready to change your life

As you begin your recovery, here are some positive exercises to support you:

Write down your reasons for seeking help

Think about what is important to you that could be put at risk by drinking or drug use — your family, paying the bills, your job, your Brothers and Sisters, your health, or your future. Imagine yourself living exactly the same way five years from now. Is there anything you would want to be different? If so, what would need to happen to make that change?

Imagine a bright future

Ask yourself what your future self would say to encourage you to start treatment. Imagine what it feels like to have the freedom to spend time with your loved ones, doing the things you enjoy — to be on top of your game at work — to stand strong with your Brothers and Sisters — to feel healthy, proud, and full of life.

Start planning

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t deciding to get help, it’s figuring out how to make it work with everything else in your life. Getting to your appointment, finding someone to watch your child, or fitting treatment around long shifts and other responsibilities can all make it tricky.

A Navigator Care Consultant will stand with you to make it easier. We’ll help you set up an appointment at a time that works for you and find options that fit around your schedule, so you can focus on your health without feeling like you’re letting anyone down.

Build your awareness

Think about the times when you feel tempted to turn to drugs or alcohol. This will be helpful during treatment, too — understanding when these times arise to help you avoid certain situations going forward. Think of this as a time to explore and learn about your drug or alcohol use and get the tools to help manage it.

Reach out to your loved ones

When experiencing the heavy emotions that may come with using drugs and alcohol, let your friends and family know that you would like them to be part of your support team — to check in and encourage you to stick with your treatment. Speak to others who have battled their own drug and alcohol challenges and come through to lead a full life afterwards.

Explore activities to do during treatment

These activities can help when you’re tempted to drink or use drugs — maybe it’s exercise, listening to music, spending time outdoors, or working with your hands on a project. If you feel ready, you might find it meaningful to use your experience to support Brothers and Sisters who are facing similar challenges. By stepping up, you show that getting help is possible and that recovery builds strength. You’re setting a positive example and paving the way for a brighter future. What you’re doing is inspiring to many.
